The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is a statutory body established under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998, and continued under the Electricity Act, 2003. CERC plays a pivotal role in regulating the electricity sector in India by determining tariffs for generating companies owned or controlled by the Central Government and for inter-State transmission of electricity, regulating inter-State transmission, and discharging other functions entrusted to it under the Act.

In its quasi-judicial capacity, CERC adjudicates disputes arising within its statutory jurisdiction, including disputes involving generating companies and transmission licensees in matters relating to the regulation of inter-State transmission of electricity. It also exercises licensing and other statutory powers in accordance with the provisions of the Act. In furtherance of its mandate, CERC promotes competition, efficiency and economy in the electricity sector, facilitates the development of a competitive electricity market, and safeguards consumer interests.

Through its regulatory, quasi-judicial and market development functions, CERC strives to foster transparency, regulatory certainty and the efficient, reliable and sustainable development of the electricity sector in India.
